George Frederick Root was an American songwriter, composer, and music publisher. He was born on August 30, 1825 in Sheffield, Massachusetts. He was the son of a farmer and a schoolteacher. He studied music at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and later taught music in New York City. Root was a prolific composer, writing over 600 songs, including the popular Civil War song "The Battle Cry of Freedom". He also wrote the popular Christmas carol "The Little Drummer Boy". He was a successful music publisher, founding the Root & Cady publishing house in Chicago in 1864. Root was a successful businessman and philanthropist. He was a member of the Chicago Board of Trade and a director of the Chicago Musical College. He was also a generous donor to the Chicago Public Library and the Chicago Historical Society. Root died on August 6, 1895 in Chicago, Illinois. He was buried in the Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.
