Reginald De Koven was an American composer, music critic, and musicologist. He is best known for his operettas, including Robin Hood (1890) and The Red Mill (1906). He also wrote a number of popular songs, including "Oh, Promise Me" (1889). De Koven was born in Middletown, Connecticut, the son of Henry De Koven, a wealthy banker, and his wife, Mary (née Smith). He studied music in Europe, and in 1883 he became the first American to win the Prix de Rome for composition. De Koven wrote a number of operettas, including Robin Hood (1890), The Red Mill (1906), and The Three Dragoons (1908). He also wrote a number of popular songs, including "Oh, Promise Me" (1889), "The Little Church Around the Corner" (1890), and "The Bells of St. Mary's" (1917). De Koven was also a music critic and musicologist. He wrote a number of books on music, including The History of Music (1890) and The Story of Music (1902). He was also a professor of music at the University of Chicago from 1892 to 1895. De Koven died in 1920 in New York City. He was buried in Middletown, Connecticut.

Composer ("Oh, Promise Me") and author, educated at St. John's College in Oxford, England. He also studied with Lebert, Pruckner, Vannucini, von Suppe, Genee, and Delibes. He earned an honorary Mus. D. at Racine College. He first worked in a brokerage firm, and also owned a dry-cleaning business in 1882, becoming a music critic for the Chicago Evening Post in 1889 and Harper's Weekly from 1895-1897, and the New York World between 1898 and 1900 and again between 1907 and 1912. He organized and conducted the Washington, D. C.
