Walter Melrose was an American lyricist and composer. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 26, 1889. He was the son of a music publisher, and he began writing songs at an early age. He wrote the lyrics for many popular songs, including "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles," "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover," and "I'm Sitting on Top of the World." He also wrote the lyrics for the musicals "The Red Mill" and "The Chocolate Soldier." Melrose was a prolific songwriter, and his songs were recorded by many of the top singers of the day, including Bing Crosby, Al Jolson, and Louis Armstrong. He also wrote the lyrics for the popular song "The Sidewalks of New York," which was recorded by many artists, including Frank Sinatra. Melrose was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970. He died in Los Angeles, California, on April 28, 1971. He was 81 years old.
