Toshiko Akiyoshi is a Japanese jazz composer, arranger, and pianist. She is considered one of the most important figures in the history of jazz in Japan. She has composed over 100 works, including big band pieces, chamber music, and solo piano works. She has also released over 30 albums as a leader. Akiyoshi was born in Dairen, Manchuria, in 1929. She began playing the piano at the age of six and was soon performing in public. She studied classical music at the Tokyo Music School and later at the Juilliard School in New York. In 1956, Akiyoshi moved to the United States and began performing with her own jazz trio. She soon began composing and arranging for big bands, and in 1973 she formed her own big band, the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra. The band has toured extensively and has released numerous albums. Akiyoshi has received numerous awards and honors, including a Grammy Award nomination for Best Instrumental Composition in 1985. She was also the first woman to be inducted into the Down Beat Jazz Hall of Fame in 2002. As of 2021, Toshiko Akiyoshi's net worth is estimated to be roughly $2 million.
