He attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and began his career in the theatre. He made his television debut in the BBC series Doctor Who in 1965, playing the character of the Doctor's companion, Ian Chesterton. Wilson has appeared in numerous television shows and films throughout his career, including The Avengers, The Professionals, The Italian Job, The Omen, and The Long Good Friday. He has also appeared in the television series Minder, The Sweeney, and The Bill. Wilson has been married twice, first to actress June Brown, and then to actress and singer, Joanna Lumley.
