Jimmy Greaves is a former English professional footballer and sports broadcaster. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers of all time. He began his career with Chelsea in 1957 and went on to play for AC Milan, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United and England. He scored 357 goals in 516 appearances in the Football League and 44 goals in 57 appearances for England. Greaves was born in Poplar, London, on 20 February 1940. He was the youngest of four children born to Alfred and Ethel Greaves. He attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Primary School in Poplar and then St. Bonaventure's Secondary Modern School in Forest Gate. Greaves began his football career with Chelsea in 1957, making his debut in a 3–1 win over Tottenham Hotspur. He scored 124 goals in 157 appearances for Chelsea before moving to AC Milan in 1961. He scored nine goals in 22 appearances for Milan before returning to England to join Tottenham Hotspur in December 1961. At Tottenham, Greaves scored an impressive 266 goals in 379 appearances, making him the club's all-time leading goalscorer. He also won the FA Cup in 1962 and the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1963. Greaves also had a successful international career, scoring 44 goals in 57 appearances for England. He was part of the England squad that won the 1966 World Cup and was the tournament's top scorer with six goals. Greaves retired from football in 1971 and went on to become a successful sports broadcaster. He was a regular on the BBC's Match of the Day and ITV's Saint and Greavsie. He also wrote several books about his career and life in football. Greaves was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2001.
