Nat Adderley was an American jazz cornet and trumpet player. He was the younger brother of jazz saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. Nat Adderley was known for his soulful and bluesy playing style, and he was an important part of the hard bop movement of the 1950s and 1960s. He was also a composer and arranger, and he wrote many of the tunes recorded by the Cannonball Adderley Quintet. Nat Adderley began playing trumpet at the age of 12, and he studied music at Florida A&M University. He joined his brother's band in 1955, and the two brothers toured and recorded together for the next decade. Nat Adderley also recorded several solo albums, including Work Song (1960) and That's Nat Adderley (1962). He also wrote the theme song for the television show Sanford and Son. Nat Adderley died on January 2, 2000, at the age of 68. He was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2001.
