Lasse Hallström is a Swedish film director, screenwriter, and cinematographer. He is best known for directing the films My Life as a Dog (1985), What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), Chocolat (2000), The Cider House Rules (1999), and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen (2011). Hallström was born in Stockholm, Sweden, and studied at the Swedish Film Institute. He began his career as a cinematographer, working on several Swedish films. He made his directorial debut in 1983 with the film A Guy and a Gal. Hallström has been nominated for two Academy Awards, for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for The Cider House Rules. He has also been nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Director and Best Screenplay for Chocolat. Hallström has been married to actress Lena Olin since 1994. They have two children together.
