He is best known for his films The Conformist (1970), Last Tango in Paris (1972), 1900 (1976), The Last Emperor (1987), and The Dreamers (2003). He has won numerous awards, including two Academy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, and the Palme d'Or. Bertolucci was born in Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, to parents Attilio Bertolucci and Ninetta Giovanardi. He studied at the University of Rome and began his career as a film critic. He made his directorial debut in 1962 with La Commare Secca. Bertolucci has been married twice. His first marriage was to Clare Peploe in 1972, with whom he had two children.
