He was a founding member of the pioneering psychedelic band Soft Machine in the mid-1960s, and was closely associated with the Canterbury scene. He recorded a series of albums as a solo artist and over the years worked with Brian Eno, Syd Barrett, John Cale, Robert Wyatt, Mike Oldfield, and Ollie Halsall, among others. Ayers' music is often described as a mix of psychedelia, jazz, and folk, and his lyrics are often whimsical and humorous. He has released over 20 albums as a solo artist, and has collaborated with many other musicians. He is also a talented multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums. Ayers has been cited as an influence by many artists, including David Bowie, Radiohead, and The Cure. He continues to tour and record, and his most recent album, The Unfairground, was released in 2007.
