Jimmy Durante was an American entertainer, comedian, singer, and actor. He was known for his distinctive gravelly voice, his large nose, and his signature phrase, "Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are!" Durante was a popular vaudeville performer in the 1920s and 1930s, and was a major star of radio, film, and television in the 1940s and 1950s. He was also a successful recording artist, with several hit songs, including "Inka Dinka Doo" and "Frosty the Snowman". Durante began his career as a vaudeville performer in the early 1920s, and soon became a popular headliner. He made his Broadway debut in the musical comedy "The New Yorkers" in 1930, and went on to appear in several other Broadway shows. He also appeared in several films, including "The Great Ziegfeld" (1936) and "The Man Who Came to Dinner" (1941). Durante was a popular radio performer in the 1940s, and was the star of his own show, "The Jimmy Durante Show", from 1945 to 1949. He also appeared in several television shows, including "The Jimmy Durante Show" (1954-1955) and "The Jimmy Durante Comedy Hour" (1956-1957). Durante was a successful recording artist, with several hit songs, including "Inka Dinka Doo" and "Frosty the Snowman". He also wrote the lyrics to the song "Make Someone Happy", which was featured in the musical "Do Re Mi". Durante was married twice, first to Jean Olson (1921-1943) and then to Marjorie Little (1944-1974). He had two children, Ronald and Joanne. Durante died on 29 January, 1980 in Santa Monica, California, USA.

According to the book, "Hollywood Trivia", (Greenwich House, 1984), by David P. Strauss, Jimmy Durante's famous "Mrs. Calabash" sign-off referred to his first wife, Jeanne Olson. Calabash was the name of a Chicago suburb they both liked. However, there is no known Chicago suburb named Calabash.

1980

For years, he signed off his radio and television shows with "Goodnight Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are", but he would never divulge who she was. Some speculated it was a "code name" for a current or former lover, some doubted she ever existed. It was not until after his death in 1980 that it was revealed she was, indeed, a real person.

On August 15, 1958, for his charitable acts, Durante was awarded a huge three foot high brass loving cup by the Al Bahr Shriners Temple. The inscription was, "Jimmy Durant, the World's Most Famous Comedian. A loving cup to you, Jimmy. It's larger than your nose, but smaller than your heart. Happiness always, Al Bahr Temple, August 15, 1958".
