Isaac Hayes is an American singer, songwriter, musician, record producer, and actor. He is best known for his work in the early 1970s as part of the soul duo Isaac Hayes and David Porter, as well as his solo work, including the theme song for the 1971 film Shaft. Hayes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Hayes was born in Covington, Tennessee, on August 20, 1942. He began his musical career as a session musician and songwriter for Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee. He wrote and produced many hit songs for artists such as Sam and Dave, Carla Thomas, Johnnie Taylor, and The Staple Singers. In 1971, Hayes released his debut solo album, Hot Buttered Soul, which featured the hit single "Theme from Shaft". The song won Hayes an Academy Award for Best Original Song and a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist. In the 1970s, Hayes released several more albums, including Black Moses (1971), Joy (1973), and Chocolate Chip (1975). He also wrote and produced songs for other artists, including The Emotions, Millie Jackson, and The Bar-Kays. In the 1980s, Hayes released several more albums, including U-Turn (1986) and Love Attack (1988). He also wrote and produced songs for other artists, including Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick, and Aretha Franklin. In the 1990s, Hayes released several more albums, including Branded (1992) and Branded Again (1995). He also wrote and produced songs for other artists, including Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan, and The Isley Brothers. In 2002, Hayes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
