Gordie Howe was born on March 31, 1928 in Floral, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was the youngest of nine children born to Albert and Katherine Howe. He was a professional ice hockey player who played for the Detroit Red Wings and the Hartford Whalers. He was nicknamed "Mr. Hockey" and was known for his physical style of play, which included using his elbows to gain an advantage. Gordie Howe began his professional career in 1946 with the Detroit Red Wings. He played with the Red Wings for 25 seasons, winning four Stanley Cups and six Hart Memorial Trophies. He was also a six-time Art Ross Trophy winner and a two-time Lester B. Pearson Award winner. In 1973, Howe retired from the NHL and joined the World Hockey Association (WHA). He played for the Houston Aeros and the New England Whalers, winning two Avco World Trophies. He returned to the NHL in 1979 and played one season with the Hartford Whalers. Gordie Howe was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972 and was named one of the "100 Greatest NHL Players" in 2017. He was also awarded the Order of Canada in 1971 and the Order of Hockey in Canada in 2012. Gordie Howe had an estimated net worth of $10 million at the time of his death in 2016.
