Lester Patrick was a Canadian professional ice hockey player, coach and general manager in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and the first recipient of the Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States. Born in Drummondville, Quebec, Patrick moved to Brandon, Manitoba, as a youth and played junior and senior hockey in the Manitoba Hockey Association. He joined the Stanley Cup champion Montreal Wanderers in 1906 as a playing coach, and was traded to the New Westminster Royals the following year. Patrick turned to coaching full-time during the 1908–09 season, and led the Royals to the MHA title. In 1911, Patrick was hired by the Pacific Coast Hockey Association's Victoria Aristocrats, and he won a championship in his first season. He moved to the Vancouver Millionaires the following year, and led the team to a Stanley Cup victory in 1915. After a brief stint with the Toronto Blueshirts of the National Hockey Association, Patrick returned to the west coast and coached the Seattle Metropolitans to a Stanley Cup in 1917. Patrick then served as general manager and coach of the New York Rangers from 1926 to 1939, leading the team to two Stanley Cup championships. He also helped found the American Hockey League, and served as president of the league from 1936 to 1945. Patrick was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1947. He died in New York City in 1960.
