Esther Shkalim is an Israeli poet, Mizrahi feminist, and cultural researcher. She was born in Tehran, Iran, on 19 January 1954. She is 66 years old. Shkalim is a graduate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where she earned a BA in Hebrew Literature and an MA in Jewish Thought. She has also studied at the University of Haifa and the University of Tel Aviv. Shkalim is a prominent figure in the Mizrahi feminist movement in Israel. She has written extensively on the subject of Mizrahi identity and culture, and has published several books of poetry. She is also a lecturer at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Open University of Israel. Shkalim is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Prime Minister's Prize for Literature in 2006, the Yehuda Amichai Prize for Poetry in 2008, and the Israel Prize for Literature in 2018. After her national service she completed a BA in literature and history at Bar Ilan University. She then married and had three children. Later, she divorced. In the early 1990s, her husband was sent to the United States for four years for work, and that was when she started writing, as she was disconnected from home, friends, family and work. Shkalim says she is not influenced by other writers, and actually does not read poetry, because "when I read I don't write".

Shkalim was born in Tehran, the capital of Iran, to Nurit and Peretz Shkalim, the second of their five children. In 1958, when she was four, the family immigrated to Israel, where her father became a carpet dealer, and owner of a chain of stores.
