He is best known for his work with the Toronto-based jazz trio, The Boss Brass, and for his collaborations with jazz greats such as Oscar Peterson, Paul Desmond, and Chet Baker. Bickert was born in Hochfeld, Manitoba, Canada, and began playing guitar at the age of 12. He studied music at the University of Manitoba and then moved to Toronto in the early 1950s. He quickly became a sought-after session musician, playing on numerous recordings and television shows. In the 1960s, Bickert joined The Boss Brass, a jazz trio that included bassist Don Thompson and drummer Terry Clarke. The trio released several albums and toured extensively throughout Canada and the United States. In the 1970s, Bickert began to focus more on his solo career, releasing several albums and performing at jazz festivals around the world. He also collaborated with jazz greats such as Oscar Peterson, Paul Desmond, and Chet Baker. Bickert has been recognized for his contributions to jazz with several awards, including the Order of Canada in 2003. He continues to perform and record, and is considered one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time.
