David Allan Coe is an American singer-songwriter and musician who has released more than 20 studio albums and over 50 singles. He is best known for his 1975 hit single "You Never Even Called Me By My Name" and his 1982 hit single "Mona Lisa Lost Her Smile". He has also written songs for Johnny Cash, George Jones, and Tammy Wynette. Coe was born in Akron, Ohio, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a steelworker and his mother was a gospel singer. He began playing guitar at the age of nine and was performing in local bars by the time he was a teenager. Coe released his first album, Penitentiary Blues, in 1968. He has since released more than 20 studio albums and over 50 singles. He has also written songs for Johnny Cash, George Jones, and Tammy Wynette. Coe has been inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
