Carlo Bergonzi was an Italian operatic tenor who had a major international opera career from the late 1940s through the early 1990s. He was widely considered one of the finest tenors of the post-war period, and was particularly admired for his performances of the works of Giuseppe Verdi. Bergonzi was born in Vidalenzo, Polesine Parmense, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, on 13 July 1924. He studied with Ettore Campogalliani at the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi in Milan, and made his professional opera debut in 1946 at the Teatro Municipale in Reggio Emilia as Des Grieux in Massenet's Manon. He sang regularly at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan from 1951 to 1966, and made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in London in 1959. He also appeared at the Vienna State Opera, the Salzburg Festival, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Bergonzi was particularly admired for his performances of the works of Verdi, and he sang in many of the composer's operas, including Rigoletto, La traviata, Il trovatore, Don Carlos, Aida, Otello, and Falstaff. He also sang in operas by Puccini, Mozart, Donizetti, and other composers. He made numerous recordings throughout his career, and was the recipient of numerous awards and honors. Bergonzi retired from the stage in 1993, and died in Milan on 25 July 2014 at the age of 90.

In 1955, he made his US debut with the Lyric Theater of Chicago (now the Lyric Opera of Chicago) as Luigi in Puccini's "Il Tabarro." In 1956, he made his Met debut as Radames in "Aida".

1950

He was considered the foremost Verdi tenor of his time. He sang more than 300 times with the Metropolitan Opera of New York from the 1950s to the 1980s.

1948

He made his operatic debut in 1948 as a baritone, singing the title part in Rossini's "Barber of Seville" in southern Italy. After realizing that tenor parts were better suited for his voice, he made a second debut, as a tenor, in the title role in Umberto Giordano's "Andrea Chénier" in Bari in 1951.
