Andy Bell is an English singer, songwriter, and musician. He is best known as the lead singer of the synth-pop duo Erasure, which he formed with keyboardist Vince Clarke in 1985. He has also released two solo albums, Non-Stop and Electric Blue. Bell was born in Peterborough, England, and grew up in the nearby village of Dogsthorpe. He attended the Kings School in Peterborough, where he was a choirboy. He began playing the guitar at the age of 12, and soon after joined his first band, the Uncles. In 1985, Bell and Clarke formed Erasure, and the duo went on to become one of the most successful synth-pop acts of the 1980s and 1990s. They released a string of hit singles, including "A Little Respect," "Chains of Love," and "Always." The duo has sold over 25 million albums worldwide. In addition to his work with Erasure, Bell has released two solo albums, Non-Stop and Electric Blue. He has also collaborated with other artists, including Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, and Yazoo. Bell is openly gay, and has been in a relationship with Paul Hickey since 1988. He is an animal rights activist, and is a patron of the animal welfare charity PETA.
