Ted Curson is an American jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on June 3, 1935. He began playing trumpet at the age of nine and was soon performing with local jazz bands. He attended the Granoff School of Music in Philadelphia and then the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. In the late 1950s, Curson moved to Paris, France, where he performed with some of the leading jazz musicians of the day, including Kenny Clarke, Bud Powell, and Art Blakey. He also recorded several albums as a leader, including Tears for Dolphy (1964) and The New Thing & The Blue Thing (1965). In the 1970s, Curson returned to the United States and continued to perform and record. He has released several albums as a leader, including The Fox (1975), Ted Curson Plays the Blues (1977), and The Long March (1980). He has also performed and recorded with a variety of jazz musicians, including Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus, and McCoy Tyner.
