Johnny Rivers is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. He is best known for his hit singles "Secret Agent Man," "Poor Side of Town," and "Baby I Need Your Lovin'." Rivers has released over 20 albums and has sold over 30 million records worldwide. Rivers was born in New York City and grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He began playing guitar at the age of eight and was influenced by the music of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Fats Domino. He began performing in local clubs and bars in the late 1950s. In 1964, Rivers signed with Imperial Records and released his debut single, "Memphis," which became a Top 10 hit. He followed this success with the hit singles "Mountain of Love," "Seventh Son," and "Secret Agent Man." Rivers also released several albums during this period, including Realization (1966) and Changes (1967). In the 1970s, Rivers moved to Los Angeles and signed with United Artists Records. He released the hit singles "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu," "Swayin' to the Music (Slow Dancin')," and "Baby I Need Your Lovin'." He also released several albums during this period, including L.A. Reggae (1972) and Blue Suede Shoes (1973). Rivers has continued to record and perform throughout the years, releasing the albums Road (1980) and Last Train to Memphis (1995). He has also been inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. Rivers formed his own group called The Spades while still in junior high school in 1956 and even recorded a few songs on the Suede label. Following brief abortive stints in both New York -- where legendary rock'n'roll disc jockey Alan Freed suggested that Johnny change his last name to Rivers -- and Nashville, Johnny settled in Los Angeles. He soon became a popular headliner at the famous nightclub The Whisky-a-Go-Go.
