Grant Lee Phillips is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He is best known as the lead singer and guitarist of the alternative rock band Grant Lee Buffalo. He has released several solo albums and has collaborated with other artists. Phillips was born in Stockton, California, and grew up in the nearby town of Lodi. He began playing guitar at the age of 12 and soon began writing songs. He attended the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he studied literature and creative writing. Phillips began his music career in the early 1990s, when he formed the band Grant Lee Buffalo with bassist Paul Kimble and drummer Joey Peters. The band released four albums between 1993 and 1998, and toured extensively in the United States and Europe. In 1998, Phillips released his first solo album, Ladies' Love Oracle. He has since released five more solo albums, including his most recent, Widdershins, in 2018. He has also collaborated with other artists, including R.E.M., The Jayhawks, and The Smashing Pumpkins. Phillips has received critical acclaim for his songwriting and live performances. He has been nominated for several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance in 1999.
