Abraham Beame was an American politician who served as the 104th Mayor of New York City from 1974 to 1977. He was the first Jewish mayor of the city. Beame was born in London, England, to Jewish immigrants from Poland. He moved to the United States with his family in 1921, and attended New York City public schools. He graduated from City College of New York in 1930, and received a law degree from St. John's University School of Law in 1933. Beame began his political career in 1945, when he was elected to the New York City Council. He served as City Comptroller from 1961 to 1965, and was elected Mayor in 1973. As Mayor, Beame was credited with helping to restore the city's fiscal health, and he was re-elected in 1977. Beame retired from politics in 1977, and died in 2001 at the age of 94. He was remembered as a dedicated public servant who worked to improve the lives of New Yorkers.
