David Birnbaum is a Canadian journalist and administrator. He was born on April 8, 1956 in Montreal, Quebec. He is the son of the late Canadian journalist and broadcaster, Pierre Birnbaum. Birnbaum attended McGill University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978. He then went on to pursue a Master of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Toronto in 1980. Birnbaum began his career as a journalist in the early 1980s, working for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and the Montreal Gazette. He then went on to become the editor-in-chief of the Montreal Gazette in 1989. In 1994, Birnbaum was appointed as the president and CEO of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). During his tenure, he was responsible for the launch of the CBC News Network and the CBC Radio 2 network. He also oversaw the launch of the CBC's first digital television service. In 2000, Birnbaum left the CBC and became the president and CEO of the Canadian Media Fund. He held this position until 2006. Birnbaum is currently the president and CEO of the Canadian Media Producers Association (CMPA). He has held this position since 2006.
