Yehuda Bauer is a Czech-born Israeli historian and Holocaust scholar. He is a professor of Holocaust Studies at the Avraham Harman Institute of Contemporary Jewry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Academic Advisor to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority in Jerusalem. Bauer was born in Prague in 1926 to a Jewish family. He studied at Charles University in Prague and at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He received his PhD in 1960 from the Hebrew University for a thesis on the British Mandate of Palestine. Bauer has written extensively on the Holocaust and has been a major contributor to Holocaust studies. He has written numerous books and articles on the subject, including A History of the Holocaust (1982), Rethinking the Holocaust (2001), and Jews for Sale? Nazi-Jewish Negotiations, 1933-1945 (1994). He has also served as a consultant to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. Bauer has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the Israel Prize in History in 1998, the Yad Vashem International Book Prize in 2000, and the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art in 2004.
