Wu Hongbo is a Chinese diplomat and politician who served as the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Economic and Social Affairs from 2012 to 2017. He was born on May 1952 in Shandong, China. Wu Hongbo graduated from the Beijing Foreign Studies University in 1975 and obtained a master's degree in international law from the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva in 1981. He began his diplomatic career in the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1981 and served in various capacities in the Chinese diplomatic service, including as Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva from 2004 to 2008. In 2012, Wu Hongbo was appointed Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Economic and Social Affairs. During his tenure, he was responsible for the coordination of the UN's work in the areas of economic and social development, including the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Wu Hongbo retired from the UN in 2017 and returned to China. He currently serves as the Vice-Chairman of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development.
