Simmons began his career as a writer for the Boston Herald in the late 1980s. He then moved to ESPN in 2001, where he wrote for the website Page 2 and hosted his own show, The Sports Guy's World. He left ESPN in 2015 and launched his own website, The Ringer, in 2016. Simmons has written several books, including Now I Can Die in Peace, The Book of Basketball, and The Four Factors.
