Heirens was known as the "Lipstick Killer" due to a message he left at one of the crime scenes. Heirens was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences and died in prison in 2012. Heirens was the son of a Chicago police officer and grew up in the city's North Side. He was an average student in school and had a part-time job as a grocery store clerk. Heirens was arrested in 1945 for burglary and was sent to a juvenile detention center. He was released in 1946 and returned to school. In 1945, Heirens began a series of burglaries in the Chicago area. He was arrested again in 1946 and sent to a reformatory. He was released in 1947 and returned to school.
