He is best known for his fantasy novels, including Dogland, Elsewhere, and The Gospel of the Knife. Shetterly attended the University of Minnesota, where he studied English and creative writing. He began writing professionally in the late 1970s, and his first novel, Dogland, was published in 1997. He has since written several other novels, including Elsewhere, The Gospel of the Knife, and The Freedom Maze. Shetterly has also written for television, including episodes of the series The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr. and The X-Files. He has also written several comic books, including the series Emiko Superstar. Shetterly is married to author Emma Bull, and they have two children. He currently lives in Tucson, Arizona.
