Wilfred Bungei is a Kenyan retired middle-distance runner who won the gold medal in the 800 metres at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He also won the silver medal in the 800 metres at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics in Osaka. Bungei was born on 24 July 1980 in Kabirirsang, Kenya. He began his career as a middle-distance runner in 2002, and quickly rose to prominence in the sport. He won the bronze medal in the 800 metres at the 2003 All-Africa Games in Abuja, Nigeria, and the silver medal in the 800 metres at the 2004 African Championships in Athletics in Brazzaville, Congo. In 2008, Bungei won the gold medal in the 800 metres at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, setting a new Olympic record of 1:44.65. He also won the silver medal in the 800 metres at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics in Osaka. Bungei retired from competitive athletics in 2010. He is currently the head coach of the Kenyan national athletics team. As of 2021, Wilfred Bungei's net worth is estimated to be approximately $2 million.

Bungei was ranked No.1 in the world over 800 m in 2002 and 2003. He has a personal best of 1:42.34 minutes (Rieti 2002). At the 2001 World Championships in Athletics in Edmonton he won a silver medal over 800 m, finishing behind Andre Bucher.
