Wilbert Awdry was an English writer and Anglican clergyman, best known for creating Thomas the Tank Engine and his other railway stories. He was born on 15 June 1911 in Romsey, Hampshire, England, UK. He was educated at Dauntsey's School and St Peter's College, Oxford. Awdry wrote the first book of the Railway Series, The Three Railway Engines, in 1945. He wrote a total of 26 books in the series, the last being published in 1972. He also wrote several other books, including The Little Old Engine, The Thomas the Tank Engine Man, and The Railway Series Omnibus. Awdry was awarded an OBE in the 1996 New Year Honours list for services to children's literature. He died on 21 March 1997 at the age of 85. At the time of his death, Wilbert Awdry had an estimated net worth of $2 million.
