Walter Alston was an American professional baseball player and manager. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Brooklyn Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, and Cincinnati Reds from 1936 to 1941. Alston was the manager of the Dodgers from 1954 to 1976, leading the team to seven National League pennants and four World Series championships. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983. Alston was born in Venice, Ohio, on December 1, 1911. He attended St. Mary's College in Dayton, Ohio, and signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1936. He made his major league debut in 1937 and played in the majors until 1941. Alston then served in the United States Navy during World War II. After the war, Alston returned to the Dodgers and served as a coach and scout. In 1954, he was named the team's manager, replacing Chuck Dressen. Alston led the Dodgers to seven National League pennants and four World Series championships. He was named the National League Manager of the Year in 1974 and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983. Alston retired after the 1976 season and was succeeded by Tommy Lasorda. He died on October 1, 1984, in Oxford, Ohio.
