He attended the University of Memphis, where he was a two-time All-Conference USA selection. Smith was drafted by the Houston Texans in the third round of the 2004 NFL Draft. He played for the Texans for seven seasons, before signing with the Miami Dolphins in 2011. He played for the Dolphins for two seasons, before signing with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013. He retired from the NFL in 2014. Smith was a two-time Pro Bowl selection, and was named to the All-Pro team in 2009. He was also named to the NFL's All-Decade Team for the 2000s.
