He has also worked on films such as The Departed, The Town, and The Fighter. Hammond was born in Los Angeles, California on December 31, 1959. He attended the University of Southern California, where he earned a degree in film production. Hammond began his career in the film industry in the late 1980s, working as an assistant editor on films such as The Last Boy Scout and The Doors. He then moved into television, working as an editor on shows such as NYPD Blue and The X-Files. In 2002, Hammond was hired as an editor on the critically acclaimed HBO series The Sopranos. He worked on the show for its entire six-season run, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the show in 2004. In 2006, Hammond was hired as an editor on the FX series The Shield. He worked on the show for its entire seven-season run, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the show in 2007. In 2008, Hammond was hired as an editor on the HBO series The Wire. He worked on the show for its entire five-season run, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the show in 2009. In 2010, Hammond was hired as a producer and director on the film The Fighter. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the film in 2011. On April 30th, 2019, His wife of over 28 years, Executive Producer and Producer Sheryl L. Hammond suddenly passed away from complications of Pneumonia.

1990

He was personally requested by Sammy Davis, Jr. to become the technical advisor of Sammy's Beverly Hills home screening room. (1983- 1989). The state of the art screening room equipment was given to Sammy and Altovise as a wedding gift from the late Howard Hughes some years prior.Throughout the years, Sammy orchestrated what became a continuous weekend event for the celebrity and his friends within the industry. Virgil spent New Years eve, 1990 toasting with Sammy and company not knowing it would be his last. He was present at Sammy's Beverly Hills home months later when he passed on May 16th, 1990.

1987

In 1987, he was at that time, the youngest individual to ever possess a State of Nevada Gaming License issued by the State of Nevada Gaming Control Board as a Hotel-Casino Owner and Operator. He once owned the Red Dog Saloon from 1987 to 1990 and under the new name of the Longbranch Saloon. The Red Dog was the original name in the 60's and 70's until removed due to the violence in which the name brought. A truly historic time. Today, it still stands and has reclaimed it's original name of the Red Dog Saloon.

1980

In 1980, he became a Certified Steadicam Operator by attending the Cinema Products course in Los Angeles, California developed by Garrett Brown, the inventor of the Steadicam Stabilization System.
