Viive Sterpu is a former Estonian politician and diplomat. She was born in Tallinn, Estonia, and graduated from the University of Tartu in 1976 with a degree in international law. She then went on to work in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic, and later in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia. In 1992, Sterpu was appointed as the Estonian Ambassador to the United States, and in 1995 she became the first female Ambassador of Estonia to the United Nations. She served in this role until 1998. In 2000, Sterpu was elected to the Estonian Parliament, where she served until 2003. She was also a member of the Estonian delegation to the Council of Europe from 2003 to 2006. Sterpu is currently a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences and a professor at the University of Tartu. She is also a member of the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the International Institute for Human Rights. Sterpu is married and has two children.
