Tory Dent is an American poet, writer, and HIV/AIDS activist. She was born on January 1, 1958 in Wilmington, Delaware. She attended the University of Delaware and received her B.A. in English in 1980. She then attended the University of Iowa, where she received her M.F.A. in Poetry in 1984. Dent is the author of two collections of poetry, HIV, Mon Amour (1995) and Black Milk (2004). She has also written essays and reviews for numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Village Voice. Dent has been an HIV/AIDS activist since the early 1990s. She has served on the boards of several HIV/AIDS organizations, including the National AIDS Fund and the AIDS Action Council. She is also a founding member of the HIV Story Project, an organization that works to document the stories of people living with HIV/AIDS. Dent is currently a professor of English at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is also a visiting professor at the University of Iowa.
