He is best known for his crime fiction novels, which have been translated into several languages. Damhaug studied medicine at the University of Oslo and graduated in 1985. He worked as a doctor in Norway and abroad, including in the United States, before becoming a full-time writer in 2000. Damhaug has written several crime fiction novels, including the Inspector Sejer series, which has been adapted into a television series. He has also written several non-fiction books, including a biography of the Norwegian author Knut Hamsun. Damhaug has won several awards for his writing, including the Riverton Prize for Best Norwegian Crime Novel in 2002 and the Glass Key Award for Best Nordic Crime Novel in 2004.
