Toon Tellegen is a Dutch writer, poet, and playwright. He is best known for his children's books, which have been translated into many languages. He has also written several plays and novels for adults. Tellegen was born in Brielle, Zuid-Holland, Netherlands, on 18 November 1941. He studied Dutch language and literature at the University of Amsterdam. After graduating, he worked as a teacher and editor for several publishing houses. Tellegen's first book, De kleine kapitein (The Little Captain), was published in 1975. Since then, he has written more than fifty books for children, including the popular series about the animals of the forest, De dieren van de bos (The Animals of the Forest). His books have been translated into many languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, and Japanese. Tellegen has also written several plays and novels for adults. His plays have been performed in the Netherlands and abroad. His novel, De verdwijning (The Disappearance), was awarded the AKO Literature Prize in 2002. Tellegen has received numerous awards for his work, including the Dutch State Prize for Children's Literature in 1988 and the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2004.
