Tony Cokes is an American contemporary artist who was born in 1956 in Richmond, Virginia. He is best known for his video works, which often explore themes of race, gender, and power. He has exhibited his work in numerous galleries and museums around the world, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Centre Pompidou. Cokes received his BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1979 and his MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1983. He has taught at numerous universities, including Harvard University, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Rhode Island School of Design. Cokes has received numerous awards and honors, including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship in 2004 and the Anonymous Was a Woman Award in 2018. He currently lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island.
