Ton Scherpenzeel is a Dutch musician, composer, and producer. He is best known as the keyboardist and founding member of the progressive rock band Kayak. He has also released several solo albums and collaborated with other artists. Scherpenzeel was born in Hilversum, Netherlands, on 6 August 1952. He began playing the piano at the age of six and was soon playing in local bands. He studied music at the Hilversum Conservatory and then went on to study composition and arranging at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. In 1972, Scherpenzeel formed the progressive rock band Kayak with fellow musicians Max Werner, Pim Koopman, and Johan Slager. The band released their debut album See See The Sun in 1973 and went on to release several more albums over the next decade. In addition to his work with Kayak, Scherpenzeel has released several solo albums, including The Last Seven Days (1980), The Best of Ton Scherpenzeel (1985), and The Best of Ton Scherpenzeel, Vol. 2 (1995). He has also collaborated with other artists, including Dutch singer/songwriter Jan Rot and Dutch singer/songwriter/producer Jan Akkerman. Scherpenzeel is currently 71 years old. 1991

In 1991 Scherpenzeel released his third solo album Virgin Grounds, under the pseudonym Orion. In 1998 he played a synth solo on the song "Cosmic Fusion", from Ayreon's album Into the Electric Castle, a rock opera on which Edward Reekers, also of Kayak, played one of the main roles. In 2013 he released his fourth solo CD, The Lion's Dream.

1978

His first solo album (1978) was an adaptation of Le carnaval des animaux by French classical music composer Camille Saint-Saëns. In 1980, Ton wrote the score for the Dutch movie Spetters, featuring Rutger Hauer. His second solo album, Heart of the Universe (with Chris Rainbow), came in 1984 and is a combination of instrumental and vocal tracks.
