Tom Aldredge was an American actor who was best known for his roles in the films The Deer Hunter, The Money Pit, and The Bonfire of the Vanities. He was born on February 28, 1928 in Dayton, Ohio. Aldredge began his career in the theater, appearing in productions of The Fantasticks, The Skin of Our Teeth, and The Iceman Cometh. He made his film debut in the 1976 drama The Missouri Breaks, and went on to appear in a number of films, including The Deer Hunter, The Money Pit, The Bonfire of the Vanities, and The Manchurian Candidate. On television, Aldredge had a recurring role on the HBO series The Sopranos, playing the role of Rusty Irish. He also appeared in episodes of Law & Order, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and The West Wing. Aldredge was married to actress Jane White from 1956 until his death in 2011. He had two children, a son and a daughter. At the time of his death, Aldredge had an estimated net worth of $2 million.

Has been nominated for Broadway's Tony Award five times: as Best Actor (Dramatic) in 1972 for "Sticks and Bones"; as Best Supporting or Featured Actor (Musical) in 1975 for a revival of "Where's Charley?"; as Best Actor (Featured Role - Musical) in 1994 for "Passion," a performance he recreated in the television version of the same title, Passion (1996); and as Best Actor (Featured Role - Play) in 1981 for a revival of Lillian Hellman's "The Little Foxes," and in 2004 for a revival of "Twentieth Century." He has yet to win.

First appearing off-Broadway in 1957 in "Electra" and on Broadway in 1959 in "The Nervous Set," Aldredge has appeared in over 30 Broadway and off-Broadway productions.

1949

Tom was attending the Art Institute of Chicago, Goodman School of Theatre, in 1949, studying acting. Tom's future wife Theoni arrived from Athens on a Goodman scholarship at the drama school. Romance followed with Tom and Theoni's marriage in December, 1953. Theoni, upon completion of her degree, accepted a Costume Design teaching position with the Goodman's staff, remaining until June, 1957. Departing Chicago, Theoni moved to NYC, joining Tom, where he had relocated pursuing acting gigs on the off/on Broadway circuit of productions and acting opportunities.

1940

As a pre-law student at the University of Dayton, he visited New York in the 1940s and approached the Ethel Barrymore Theater. Merely eager to see the inside of a major Broadway theater, he asked two guys outside in the alley, whom he assumed were stagehands, if he could take a quick look. "Buy a ticket," one of them advised him. After paying $1.80. Aldredge watched as the purported "stagehands" - Marlon Brando and Karl Malden - strode out to perform in "A Streetcar Named Desire." After that, Aldredge said, his ambitions to become a lawyer suddenly changed.
