He is best known for his 1964 novel, Little Big Man, which was adapted into a 1970 film starring Dustin Hoffman. He has written over 20 novels, as well as several plays and short stories. Berger attended the University of Cincinnati and served in the United States Army during World War II. After the war, he attended Columbia University, where he earned a master's degree in English. Berger has been married twice, first to Joan Copeland and then to Jeanne Redpath. He has two children, a son and a daughter. Berger's net worth is estimated to be around $2 million.
