Takashi Yanase was a Japanese writer, actor, and songwriter. He is best known for creating the popular character Anpanman, which has been adapted into a long-running anime series. He was also the author of the popular children's book series Obake no Q-Taro. Yanase was born in Kochi, Japan, on February 6, 1919. He attended Kochi High School and graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 1941. After graduation, he worked as a cartoonist for the magazine Shonen Club. In 1973, Yanase created the character Anpanman, which became a popular character in Japan. The character has since been adapted into a long-running anime series, as well as a number of movies and video games. In addition to Anpanman, Yanase wrote and illustrated a number of other books, including Obake no Q-Taro, which was adapted into an anime series in 1979. He also wrote and composed the theme song for the series. Yanase passed away on October 13, 2013, at the age of 94. He was posthumously awarded the Order of the Rising Sun in 2014.
