Taarak Mehta was an Indian columnist, humorist, and playwright who wrote the popular column Duniya Ne Undha Chasma for the Gujarati weekly magazine Chitralekha. He was also the creator of the popular television show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Mehta was born on 26 December 1929 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He studied at the Gujarat Vidyapith and obtained a degree in Gujarati literature. He started his career as a teacher in a school in Ahmedabad. Mehta wrote the column Duniya Ne Undha Chasma for the Gujarati weekly magazine Chitralekha. He also wrote several plays, including the popular play Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Mehta was awarded the Padma Shri in 2015 for his contribution to literature and education. He passed away on 1 March 2017 at the age of 87. Mehta was married to Ila Mehta and had two sons, Bhavesh and Raju.
