Susan Ouriou is a Canadian writer, translator, and editor. She was born on July 15, 1955 in Red Deer, Alberta. She is best known for her work as a translator of French-language literature, including works by authors such as Marie-Claire Blais, Anne Hébert, and Nicole Brossard. Ouriou studied at the University of Alberta, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in French and English in 1977. She then went on to earn a Master of Arts in French literature from the University of Toronto in 1979. Ouriou has worked as a translator since the early 1980s, and has translated over twenty books from French to English. She has also edited several anthologies of Canadian literature, including The New Canon: An Anthology of Canadian Literature in English (1995) and The Penguin Book of Canadian Short Stories (1996). Ouriou has received numerous awards for her work, including the Governor General's Award for Translation in 1996, the Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prize in 2000, and the Harbourfront Festival Prize in 2002. Pieces of Me, Ouriou's translation of Charlotte Gingras' La liberté? Connais pas, won the Governor General's Award for French to English translation at the 2009 Governor General's Awards. She has been shortlisted for the award three other times, for The Road to Chlifa (Michèle Marineau, La Route de Chlifa) at the 1995 Governor General's Awards, for Necessary Betrayals (Guillaume Vigneault, Chercher le vent) at the 2003 Governor General's Awards, and as co-translator with Christelle Morelli of Stolen Sisters: The Story of Two Missing Girls, Their Families and How Canada Has Failed Indigenous Women (Emmanuelle Walter, Sœurs volées: Enquête sur un féminicide au Canada) at the 2015 Governor General's Awards.

2008

One of her many short stories, "Violette Bicyclette" (Alberta Views, 2008) won the Western Canadian Magazines Association fiction award and her first novel Damselfish was short-listed for the Writers Guild of Alberta's Georges Bugnet Fiction Award and the City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Book Prize. Several of her short stories have been translated into Spanish, French, Dutch and Bulgarian.

1994

The Thirteenth Summer, her translation of José Luis Olaizola's Planicio, was a finalist for the John Glassco Translation Prize in 1994.
