She has received two Kerala State Film Awards, three Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Kannada, one Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu, Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and Nandi Awards.
Suhasini was born to actor Charuhasan,in Paramakudi, into the prominent Haasan family. She married film director Mani Ratnam in 1988 and the couple has a son Nandan born in 1992.
Her first Kannada movie was K. Balachandars Benkiyalli Aralida Hoovu (1983) which was a big hit. The mega success of Rajendra Singh Babu's Bandhana opposite Vishnuvardhan, established her in Kannada films as well and she went on to give several more hits over the next few years - Muthina Haara (1990), Suprabhatha, Hendthig Helthini and Amruthavarshini to name a few. Her collaboration with Vishnuvardhan is considered as one of the best in Kannada cinema. The duo has acted together in many blockbuster films that include Bandhana, Suprabhatha, Muthina Haara, Hendthig Helthini, Himapatha, Mathad Mathad Mallige and School Master.
She was introduced to Malayalam cinema through Padmarajan's Koodevide (1983), which also featured Mammootty. Her role in the AFI Fest-nominated feature Vanaprastham (1999), which starred Mohanlal, was particularly well received. She won the National Film Award for Best Actress in 1986 for her role in the 1985 Tamil film Sindhu Bhairavi, directed by K. Balachander. In 1996, Suhasini stepped into direction with Indira. She also wrote the screenplay. The project was produced by G. V. Films.
A student of cinematography from the M.G.R. Government Film and Television Training Institute, Suhasini started her career as a camera assistant to Ashok Kumar and went on to become an actress. Suhasini has acted in Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada films. She started her career as a make-up artist for several leading actors. She made her debut with the Tamil film Nenjathai Killathe opposite Kokila Mohan. She was a top star in both Tamil and Telugu films during the 1980's.
