Stephen Altschul is an American mathematician and computer scientist. He is best known for his work in the fields of bioinformatics and computational biology. He is currently a professor at the University of California, San Diego, and a senior investigator at the National Institutes of Health. Altschul was born in 1957 in New York City. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Harvard University in 1979 and his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1984. Altschul is best known for his work in the fields of bioinformatics and computational biology. He is the author of the widely used BLAST sequence alignment algorithm, which is used to compare biological sequences. He is also the author of the widely used Smith-Waterman algorithm for local sequence alignment. Altschul is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the National Institutes of Health Director's Pioneer Award, the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Computer and Cognitive Science, and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology's Earl and Thressa Stadtman Distinguished Scientist Award.
