He is currently ranked as the world's number one light heavyweight by The Ring magazine. Kretschmann was born on 8 June 1980 in Köthen (Anhalt), Germany. He began boxing at the age of 15 and quickly rose through the amateur ranks, winning the German amateur light heavyweight title in 1999. He turned professional in 2000 and won his first world title in 2003, when he defeated American boxer Montell Griffin for the WBC light heavyweight title. Kretschmann has since gone on to win multiple world titles, including the WBA, IBF, and WBO light heavyweight titles. He has also held the WBC interim light heavyweight title. He is currently the longest-reigning light heavyweight champion in boxing history. Kretschmann is married to his wife, Sabine, and they have two children.
