He is best known for his gold medal performance at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, where he won the men's individual all-around title. He also won a silver medal in the team all-around event. Cepoi began his gymnastics career at the age of 12, and was soon competing at the national level. He won his first national title in 1975, and went on to win a total of seven Romanian titles. He also competed in several international competitions, including the 1979 World Championships, where he won a bronze medal in the team all-around event. Cepoi retired from competitive gymnastics in 1981, and has since become a coach and judge. He is currently the head coach of the Romanian national team, and has been a judge at the Olympic Games and World Championships.
