Sonny Simmons is an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and arranger. He is best known for his work in the avant-garde jazz movement of the 1960s and 1970s. He has released several albums as a leader, and has collaborated with a variety of musicians, including Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and Archie Shepp. Simmons was born in Sicily Island, Louisiana, and grew up in Oakland, California. He began playing saxophone at the age of 12, and was influenced by the music of Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and Ornette Coleman. He attended San Francisco State University, where he studied music theory and composition. In the 1960s, Simmons began performing with a variety of jazz musicians, including Don Cherry, Archie Shepp, and Ornette Coleman. He released his first album as a leader, Music from the Spheres, in 1968. He has since released several more albums, including The Journey (1973), Sonny's Time Now (1975), and Ancient Ritual (1977). Simmons has also composed music for film and television, including the score for the film The Last Angel of History (1996). He has also composed music for the television series The Wire (2002-2008). Simmons continues to perform and record, and has collaborated with a variety of musicians, including John Zorn, Bill Laswell, and Henry Kaiser. He has also taught at the University of California, Berkeley, and the California Institute of the Arts.
